Sensational Soundtracks: July
Wow, this is really coming late. I know I've been really unfaithful to this blog, but I've just been really unmotivated as of late. So this is going to be the only post I do this month.
Lion King (1994)
by Hans Zimmer, with sings by Tim Rice and Elton John
If you don't know the Lion King, you've probably been living under a rock for the past twenty years. I wasn't around for its initial release, but its one of Disney's most popular films, and for very good reason. And I would argue that Zimmer's score is one of the reasons why. Between the famed opening sequence and the King of Pride Rock segment, its enough to give chills all on its own.
The African chants and instruments provide the perfect touch. I mean, just listen to This Land while the animation showcases gorgeous African planes while rain sweeps over it. The main theme is heard in both above pieces, which is chilling. And let's not forget the tragically epic piece that is ... To Die For. Those of you who have seen it, you know what I'm talking about.
As for Hans Zimmer himself, he's composed dozens of movie scores, from other animated works like Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, to taking up the helm with Batman in Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. I firmly believe him to be the modern day John Williams, capable of composing some of the best music of our generation.
