Recent Reads Two
Hello everybody! I just finished another book, so here's the review and opinions I promised to do in part one. So, drumroll, please (aggressively pounds on table to mimic a drum)....
Batman: Nightwalker
by Marie Lu
This is the second book in the DC Icons series, a chain of unrelated stories by different authors that you don't have to read in order. Batman succeeds Wonder Woman: Warbringer. And what a worthy successor it is.
It tells the story of an eighteen- year- old Bruce Wayne, who, after stopping a criminal from getting away, is sentenced to community service in Arkham Asylum. Meanwhile, attacks are happening all over the city. Its a group called the Nightwalkers, and they're targeting Gotham's elite. Bruce is next, unless he can get help from an inmate in the Asylum, Madeleine Wallace. But he just might be playing into her hands.
Batman has always been a favorite of mine. So this book immediately jumped out at me. It's clear Marie Lu did her research on the Dark Knight, as she captures Bruce Wayne's character perfectly. As I've delved deeper into his character in the comics, I've realized that he isn't the most mentally stable person, even if he is intelligent. Marie writes that out perfectly, including his never- ending thirst for justice. Of course, he's still brooding as ever, even at the young age he's written at.
There are snippets of other characters that pop up, too: Alfred and Harvey Dent to name a couple. There's a particularly exciting cameo at the end that I will not give away. Their relationships with Bruce were fun to read about, though there was less of it than I hoped.
The descriptions of the setting were well done, capturing the essence of Gotham City, especially Arkham Asylum. You could just imagine the cold halls, the iron gates of the Asylum. Marie also dives into the speculation of why it's not a prison or turned into a mental hospital.
Marie Lu herself is known for her Legend trilogy, which I enjoyed immensely.
Overall, Nightwalker was a great read, full of fight scenes and shadows. At the same time, the villain (no spoilers) annoyed me. I won't say why without giving it away, but it really ruined some of the good things for me. I still highly recommend it, though it wasn't as good as Warbringer. I give it a 7/10.
Thank you for reading, and have a great day!
